Sunday Worship

Worship takes place every Sunday in Camelon Parish Church, Dorrator Road, Camelon at 11.00 a.m. Everyone and their friends can be assured of a warm welcome

Church Magazine:    You can read the current and recent editions of our Church Magazine by clicking the button below.

The Summer edition of the magazine is now ready and being distributed.  The Autumn edition is likely to be issued in September and contributions from individuals and organisation should be sent, preferably by email to Janice Guthrie as they become available

The Summer Fête was held in the Brown Street Hall on 23rd August and raised £965.  The organisers were pleased with the attendance and the level of assistance that they had.  With a few hours of Summer weather available most of the children's activities took place outside.  The only complaint heard was that in the goal shooting the goal was too small and the goalkeeper too big!  Well done to everyone concerned.

Christian Aid Week 11th - 17th May

A Quiz Night in support of Christian Aid was held on Thursday Friday 15th May.  Teams of between two and six people took part, including one from the Boys Brigade.  Each team member made a donation and provided a prize for the lucky dip.  A total of £139.25 was raised and this will be added to the total raised for Christian Aid by our congregation.  Thanks go to Janet Crawford and Janice Arbuckle for organising the event and to Peter Marshall for doing the Magnus Magnusson bit!  The photographs above show the eventual winners "The Luverly Ladies" and the youngest competitor who decided to grasp the opportunity of getting on to the first rung of the housing ladder.

Stewardship and Outreach::    Robert McAlpine, a Church of Scotland Mission Adviser, spoke to members of the congregation who have an interest in visiting for pastoral and stewardship purposes.  This was the first event in our current Stewardship campaign.  All members are urged to give their full support to the various events associated with it, particularly by encouraging others who are not regular worshippers to participate in the various events.

Our Stewardship Campaign was launched on Sunday 18th March with an invitation to all members of the congregation to invite a friend to join them in worship and to a Mothers' Day Lunch immediately after the service.  Approximately 120 people accepted the invitation and participated in the buffet lunch served in the Dorrator Road Hall.  During lunch our minister gave a progress report on our building project.   The photographs  below illustrate the enjoyable occasion! The stewardship campaign is now in full swing and information on this along with a pledge card has been sent to all members of the congregation.

The team to undertake follow are now fully engaged on this important task and a well attended "Stewardship Lunch" was held after worship on 24th June.  Concept drawing of our new building was available along with exhibitions of the activities of Boys Brigade, Brownies and other organisations that us church premises.  Further information about stewardship is available from Mark or Janet Crawford.

Junior Church:   Our Junior Church commenced their new session on 3rd September.  The boys and girls took part in the Harvest Service and marked the occasion by wearing Harvest Hats.  A selection of the most colourful can be seen in the photograph on the right.  Clearly, hats are in fashion this year!

Morning worship on 24th December was led by the Junior Church performing their Alphabetical nativity celebration this was a wonderful family service given before a packed congregation.

This year's Pyjama Party raised £145 and this was donated to the charities chosen by the youngsters. The illustration above on the right shows how part of the money raised last year was used. This year the money collected was shared between the children's hospice CHAS and Positive Steps, an organisation that works with street children in India.  Well done again Camelon Junior Church!

On 30th March the Junior Church marked the advent of the British Summer Time clock change and enjoyed breakfast at their pyjama party.   Adults under the age of 120 were invited to dress in an item of nightwear and encouraged to join in the fun.

As you can see from the photograph there was a wide range of nightwear on display and the loss of an hour of sleep because of the clocks being put forward for British Summer Time failed to dampen their spirits!

We donated to the "Send a Cow" charity.

 National Children's Assembly

Beth Findlay (above) had a great time at the first Church of Scotland National Children's Assembly and is already looking forward to next year's event. This is what she had to say about the experience

"I went to the Children's Assembly.  On Saturday we had a prayer day.  In the morning after breakfast we sang a song and went outside to run up a tall hill and pretend to run to God.  After lunch we made a big notice saying, 'We Love God!'  At 6.00 p.m.. I went to bed but got back up for the Ceilidh.  We had a band called 'Fishy Music'. On Sunday, we said goodbye.  I was given a CD, a certificate (click HERE to see the certificate) and the photograph reproduced below. There is going to be another Children's Assembly next year."

On Easter Sunday The Junior Church made Easter baskets.  Pictured on the left is a selection of these that were on display when the adults came to the church hall after worship for coffee.

A lot has been happening in Camelon Parish Church since the union, not only within the congregation but also within the building itself. The interior has been painted to give a brighter appearance.  The wall hangings from both churches now decorate the walls along with the colours of the various organisations.  The font and lectern from St John's have been installed in the sanctuary along with one of the hymn boards.  The sound system has been upgraded and improvements to the lighting are under way.  The photograph below gives an impression of how the building looks but the only real way to see how much the work has improved the building is to come along and see for yourself!

During worship on 9th March Dan Ross, who recently retired from the Kirk Session, was presented with the Church of Scotland's Long Service Certificate in recognition of his 57 years of service as an elder.  Dan is pictured above receiving his certificate from the Reverend Stuart Sharp. Mrs Ross standing next to Dan and Deaconess  Margaret Corrie complete the picture.

The sacrament of baptism was celebrated on Sunday 9th April for Kyle Andrew Findlay, on 16th April for Emma Agnes Kilpatrick on. 1st October for Adam William Bell, on 29th October for Rhys David James Wotherspoon Aitchison on 19th November for Blair David Cunningham, on 25th February 2007 for Grace Rona Gillies, on 10th June for Chloe Helen Martin, on 24th June for Daniel Stuart Grant on 30th September for Regan Victoria Thomson. 2nd March for Karen Comrie 2008 on 23rd March for Beth Janet Kilpatrick, on 30th March for Megg Jorgia Taylor*.and on 25th May for Ruari Alexander Comrie.  We welcome them all into the family of Christ.

* Megg's baptism was a first for Camelon Parish Church.  Because of advanced pregnancy one of the Godparents was forbidden to travel so she took her vows as a  Godparent by means of a telephone link!  The photograph shows Megg's Dad receiving the telephonic vows! The other photograph is simply a nice reminder of how our congregation welcomes a new life into Christ's family!

Thanksgiving:

On 6th April during morning worship Rev Stuart Sharp and those present gave thanks for the birth of

Freddie John Thomas Gardiner and on 31st August a blessing was given to Lois Gioia Shaw and thanksgiving offered for her life.

Outreach Team:

The Outreach Team has agreed on the development of a strategy for the coming year.  Further information for anyone interesting in participating in the team can be obtained from Janet Crawford.

Pastoral Visiting Team:

It is intended to further develop the existing Pastoral Visiting Team.  The purpose of the team is to help the Ministry Team with visiting the elderly and housebound members of the congregation. This is an important ministry in the life and fellowship of Camelon Parish Church, particularly as the numbers of people on the list makes it impossible for the Ministry team to make regular visits. Training and guidance will be given to those wishing to become visitors.  Further information is available from Margaret Corrie.

Kirk Session:

The Kirk Session meets at 7.00 p.m. on Tuesday 9th September in the Dorrator Road Hall.

YCP:

Our Youth Group YCP (Young Camelon Parish) meets on Sundays in the Brown Street hall at 6.30 p.m. until approximately 8.00 p.m.  All youngsters who are in primaries 5 to 7 are most welcome. During each meeting the Group will decide what it will do at the following meeting.  Sometimes, the activity decided upon will mean that we need to meet at a different time or venue.

Lokk out here for information on the Autumn2008 session!  The photographs below show some of those who attended the session closing barbecue.

For up to date information on our activities please contact the Webmaster.

Worshippers on the First Sunday in Advent were greeted by the church Christmas decorations shown

in the photograph above.  The tree and all the other seasonal material that was installed

was the work of members of our Youth Group, Young Camelon Parish

1st Camelon Brownies

First Camelon Brownies consists of an enthusiastic group of girls who always open their meetings by dancing round their  toadstool and singing their "Six Songs".  After this they usually play a game or two and then carry out their evening's activity. The girls usually have a variety of things to do such as craft activities, involving making something to take home, producing posters for the notice board in the hall, working towards one of many Brownie Badges or raising money for their chosen charity.  Over the last few years they have supported "Children with Leukemia", sponsored a guide dog puppy (called Amber), raised money for the SSPCA and this year, (after a secret ballot) C.H.A.S. by taking part in "Rachel and Robin's Big Read.".  At the end of the night, just before they go home, they always sing"Brownie Bells".

The first badge that a girl takes is her Promise Badge and this is when she becomes a "proper" Brownie.  During the course of a year, girls work towards a number of other Brownie Badges that they are awarded as they complete the various tasks involved in gaining each one.

A number of our girls attended the annual Thinking Day event on February 22nd (this is where we think about Brownies all over the world).  This will help complete their "World Culture Badges" which they have been working towards for the last few weeks.

First Camelon Brownies meet most Mondays (not during school holidays) from 6.30 to 7.45 p.m. at the Camelon Parish Church Brown Street Halls.  It is open to all girls aged 7,8 and 9.  Unfortunately, at the moment we do have a waiting list but there are waiting list forms available.  If you wish one then please email your name and address to brownowl@camelonparishchurch.co.uk and I will post one to you.  If your daughter is aged 10 years or more and wishes to attend a Guide Unit, please email me and I will try to put you in touch with someone who can help.

The Society meets fortnightly on Tuesdays at 7.30pm in the small  Brown Street Hall. The music played at the meetings is predominantly classical, but there is sometimes a little jazz or folk music. The programmes are presented by members of the Society and a variety of other guest speakers. There is a live evening each season, with music played by pupils from St. Mary’s Music School, Edinburgh.

The membership at present is not far over twenty, but as there is enough space in the hall for many more, new members will be made very welcome. The membership fee is £12 and visitors are invited to join us at a cost of £1 per evening.

If you would like to know more about us please contact Mrs Anne Morrison (01324 485321) or email Mike Turnbull  (01324 627115). Alternatively, come along as a visitor to one of our meetings.

Walking Group

     The Mercat Cross Culross

Ian Jenkins Writes:

2008 was seen in by our Festive Walk which started in Culross. Our first stop was a lovely coffee shop which served the most delicious home baking and got everyone off on the right foot. The actual walk proceeded along the shore path to the old relics of the saltpans. Together with coal, the saltpans were a feature of this area in the 16th Century. The coal was used to provide heat for the village's second main industry - its salt pans. In the 1590s Culross produced more salt than anywhere else in Scotland.

Arriving at the saltpans which was mid way on our outing, an important festive ritual was implemented when Joan dispensed her mulled wine. Duly sustained and invigorated we completed this circular walk and arrived back at the Red Lion Hotel quite famished. A most enjoyable lunch was had by all. We will now add The Red Lion to our recommended list of Five Star Eating Places. After lunch, we concluded with a walk round the landmarks of this historic village.

The second outing of the year saw us walk the 9 mile section of the Rob Roy Way from Callander to Strathyre. The route followed the old railway line which ran alongside the loch from Callander up the far side of Loch Lubnaig. It was a fine day and the 16 walkers had a most enjoyable outing.

We arrived at Strathyre half an hour before our mini bus was scheduled to take us back to Callander and as the only available resting point was the local hotel we succumbed to another refreshment. Another great day!

On April 6th we walked from  Drymen to Aberfoyle via Loch Ard Forest and on the last Saturday in May the Walking Group completed its second 10 mile section of the Rob Roy Way, from Drymen to Aberfoyle.  Apart from the spectacular scenery this whole area is chequered with domed shafts that provide ventilation for the labyrinth of pipework that is all part of the 26 mile Loch Katrine water scheme built around 1859 and opened by Queen Victoria. This was to provide fresh water for the people of Glasgow

It was a brilliant day with temperatures in the high twenties making it an exhausting but most enjoyable outing.  At the highest point in the walk it was possible to look ahead to see the route of the next section from Aberfoyle over the Menteith hills to Callander.Twenty miles have now been completed of this Rob Roy Way, this leaves only another 59 miles to reach the end at Pitlochry.

New members are always welcome. If you are interested in joining our walks or would like more information on dress or transport please contact   Ian Jenkins (Tel 01324 626305).
